The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot Sections
The Waste Land poem is divided into five sections which are described below:
1. Burial of the Dead
The poem of the Waste Land begins with a section “Burial of the Dead “. In this section the narrator wants to describe the Spring season that brings “memory and desire,” and so the narrator’s memory drifts back to times in Munich, to childhood sled rides, and a possible romance with a “hyacinth girl“.
The narrator is now surrounded by a desolate land full of “stony rubbish” He remembers a fortune and that he should “fear death by water”.
In the last he finds himself on London Bridge, surrounded by a crowd of people and he spots a friend of his from wartime and calls out to him.
2. A Game of Chess
A Game of Chess is about female relationships. This section is based on two opposing scenes, high society and lower society. The first scene describes a highly groomed woman encompassing fearful things, as she waits for a lover. The second scene describes a group of lower-class, Cockney-speaking women sitting in a bar.
3. The Fire Sermon
This section is very important and very longest section in this poem. The poet suggests the Buddha’s “Fire Sermon”, which depicts the burning of suffering and passion. The narrator sits on the banks and muses on the cheap state of the world. As Tiresias, he sees a young “carbuncular” man hop into bed with a lonely female typist, only to argumentative make love to her and then leave without hesitation. The poem returns to the river, where maidens sing a song of lament, one of them crying over her loss of innocence to a similarly lustful man.
4.Death by water
This is the fourth section of the poem in which the narrator describes a dead Phoenician lying in the water. Phlebas likely connected to the “drowned sailor” from Madame Sosostris’s tarot pack.
5.What the Thunder Said
The Thunder said that shifts locales from the sea to the rocks and mountains. The narrator cries for rain so finally, it comes. It ushers in three-pronged victims sprung from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad: {Datta, dayadham, and damyata} to sympathize and control. With these commandments, benediction is also possible. So, despite the collapse of civilization that is under the way {London Bridge is falling falling down falling down falling down}.
